BioPod container coming to DOKK1 in Aarhus

In spring 2026, NordicFlexHouse is installing a BioPod container at DOKK1 — Aarhus' library and cultural centre on the waterfront — as a public LivingLab for sustainable food production.

Vegetables in a closed loop — in the city

The BioPod container is a complete, container-based growing system where vegetables are cultivated in a closed loop:

• 95% of water is recirculated in the system
• Crops are grown without pesticides in a controlled climate
• Aquaponics, hydroponics, and vermiponics work together to turn nutrients into fresh vegetables

The location at DOKK1, Hack Kampmanns Plads 2, was chosen carefully: thousands of citizens pass by every day, and the container becomes a visible example of how future food production can move into the urban space.

Follow the growth on this site

As part of the LivingLab project, a camera is mounted inside the container. It continuously captures short clips of the plants' development — from sowing and sprouting to harvest — and the clips are collected in the gallery as a timeline anyone can follow.

A demonstration project with a European perspective

The BioPod project has received support from the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No. 777795). LivingLab at DOKK1 aims to create visibility, learning, and citizen engagement around circular food production — while demonstrating the technology for municipalities, developers, and eco-village projects across the Nordics.
